Law enforcement officers in Azerbaijan's Neftchala district have detained a 43-year-old man suspected of organizing large-scale illegal drug trafficking. During the operation, officers stopped a Toyota vehicle driven by Samiq Abushov and discovered approximately 20 kilograms of narcotics, including hashish and marijuana, hidden within the car.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported that the suspect confessed during initial interrogation to being recruited as a drug courier by an Iranian citizen, whose identity is currently being investigated. Abushov was reportedly tasked with transporting the illicit substances to the capital, Baku. A criminal case has been initiated under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code, and a court has ordered his arrest as a preventive measure while investigations continue.
Azerbaijan remains committed to its stringent anti-narcotics policy, frequently conducting operations to dismantle international trafficking routes that attempt to use the country's territory as a transit point. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service (SSS) have intensified efforts in recent years to secure borders and prevent the smuggling of prohibited substances. These measures are part of a broader national strategy to combat organized crime and ensure public safety across the Republic of Azerbaijan.
