Khachaturyan: Armenia must adapt to changing security conditions

Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has stressed the importance of flexibility and strong institutions to preserve statehood amid changing regional and global security conditions in an address to the nation marking Independence Day.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Armenian president’s press service issued an official statement on the matter.

According to the statement, Khachaturyan said the 35-year history of independence represented an important stage in assessing the path the country had taken. The president noted that independence, sovereignty and freedom were not situational values, but fundamental responsibilities entrusted to every citizen and the state.

Referring to the parliamentary elections held in June, the head of state said democratic processes were continuing in the country. Khachaturyan added that, to withstand changing economic and geopolitical realities, Armenia should pursue a flexible foreign policy while maintaining its principles and hand over to future generations a fully sovereign and functioning state.

Independence Day is observed in Armenia as a national holiday commemorating the country’s declaration of independence. Such addresses traditionally focus on state institutions, sovereignty and the country’s future development.
