Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Astana on Saturday to discuss bilateral cooperation during the first-ever visit to Kazakhstan by a Cambodian prime minister, Anadolu Agency reported.
Tokayev said the visit would open a new chapter in bilateral relations and turn shared goals into practical cooperation, according to the Kazakh presidency.
“I believe your visit is of historic significance, as no Prime Minister of Cambodia has visited Kazakhstan before,” Tokayev said. He described Cambodia as a reliable partner in Southeast Asia and an important link in expanding Kazakhstan’s partnership with ASEAN countries.
Manet highlighted cultural and educational ties, saying that more than 120 Cambodian students had studied in Kazakhstan. Many now hold senior government positions, including as provincial governors, state secretaries and ministry officials.
Cambodia is also interested in expanding cooperation in food security, agriculture and manufacturing, Manet added.
Both leaders said they were confident the talks would boost bilateral trade, strengthen business ties and create new opportunities for cooperation.
After the meeting, Tokayev and Manet adopted a joint statement and oversaw the exchange of six bilateral documents covering digital government and information technology, trade, culture, tourism, and ties between Astana and Phnom Penh.
