Indirect talks between Iran and the United States are continuing through mediation by Qatar and Oman, Iranian lawmaker Yaqoub Rezazadeh said on Saturday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Rezazadeh, a member of Iran’s parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told the ILNA news agency that both sides had presented conditions through the mediators.
“We have presented a set of conditions, and the other side has also presented a set of conditions. We are now waiting to see whether the conditions we announced will be accepted by the Americans,” he said.
He said the contacts involved Qatar and Oman and were overseen by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Issues under discussion were handled with the council’s approval, he added.
Rezazadeh dismissed speculation about an imminent new conflict between Iran and the United States, saying predictions based on betting markets and reports of a possible pre-emptive Iranian attack were unfounded.
He said he did not expect another war before congressional elections in the United States and elections in Israel, while acknowledging that fighting could resume.
Rezazadeh said Iran would not launch a pre-emptive attack but would respond if attacked. He claimed Iran’s military, air defence and naval capabilities had improved significantly compared with the previous two rounds of fighting.
The latest reported contacts follow an understanding reached by Iran and the United States in Islamabad in June, aimed at ending hostilities and paving the way for negotiations, with Pakistan and Qatar involved in mediation.
The sides were expected to hold further talks under the understanding, but tensions later resurfaced amid disputes over its implementation and continuing military activity in the region.
Qatar and Oman have also maintained diplomatic contacts with Tehran and Washington as regional actors seek to prevent another escalation between the two sides.
