Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that a possible meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia could take place during the G20 summit in Miami in December. Washington and Moscow have not yet confirmed the talks, AnewZ reports.
Speaking to journalists in a WhatsApp media chat, Zelensky said several possible venues were being considered, including countries in Europe and the Middle East.
“The meeting could later take place in the United States, during the G20 summit. But neither Russia nor the United States has confirmed this yet. It could also take place in a European country,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader said the United States had also repeatedly suggested the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia as possible venues.
The G20 summit, planned for Miami in December, will bring together major economies, including the United States and Russia. Ukraine is not a member of the group.
Zelensky said Ukraine’s negotiating team held discussions with U.S. officials on Friday but did not disclose details. He also stressed the importance of Europe establishing its own channel for talks with Russia, as relations remain strained amid Moscow’s war against Ukraine.
U.S. sanctions against Russia and attacks on energy facilities
The possible diplomatic meeting comes amid differences over U.S. sanctions policy toward Russia. U.S. President Donald Trump has declined to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow. Zelensky criticized Washington’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports.
Russian forces continue to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Zelensky said Russian forces carried out one of their largest strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector on Friday, targeting more than 15 critical facilities involved in electricity generation and transmission across several regions.
