Azerbaijani judoka Kanan Nasibov (+100 kg) finished the world championships in Baku with a bronze medal. Speaking to journalists after the competition, he said he had set his sights on winning a medal at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Nasibov thanked the people of Azerbaijan for their support. He described Jamal Gamzatkhanov, whom he faced in the bronze-medal bout, as both a friend and a training partner. The judoka said he was not fully prepared for the match because of injuries to his back and knee, but the support from the stands gave him extra motivation.
The athlete recalled promising his coaches, Elkhan Mammadov and Mehman Jafarov, that he would reach the final. Nasibov noted that he lost to Ushangi Kokauri in the semifinals but went on to win bronze. He said he wanted to correct his mistakes and win an Olympic medal for Azerbaijan in 2028.
Nasibov said both athletes fought cautiously in his match against Gamzatkhanov because they knew each other’s techniques well. According to Nasibov, neither judoka managed to score points, but he ultimately secured the win.
