Azerbaijan’s male judoka have set a national record for the number of medals won at a single senior world championships. After four days of competition at the world championships in Baku, the team has one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Ahmad Yusifov became world champion in the 60kg category. Zelim Tchkaev won silver at 81kg, while Rashid Mammadaliyev took bronze at 73kg and Omar Rajabli claimed bronze at 81kg.
Surpassing previous results
Azerbaijani judoka have matched their overall medal tally from the 2017 world championships in Budapest. At that event, the men won three medals and the women one, but the team did not win a gold medal.
At the 2025 world championships in Budapest, Azerbaijan’s male judoka won three bronze medals, while the women did not reach the podium. At the 2018 world championships in Baku, Ushangi Kokauri won silver and Hidayat Heydarov took bronze.
The current result has yet to surpass the record of two gold medals won in Abu Dhabi in 2024. After the fourth day of competition, Azerbaijan is second in the medal standings. Japan leads with eight medals, including six golds and two bronzes. The event runs through Oct. 11, with three days of individual competition remaining.
