Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said on Thursday that his government would address weapons held outside state control under a roadmap with agreed timelines, with the process due to be completed by June 30, 2027.
In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency, Zaidi said the initiative would proceed according to “a clear roadmap and agreed timelines”.
Government to enforce state authority over weapons
The process would uphold the constitutional principle that decisions on war and peace rest with the country’s constitutional authorities, prohibiting military action outside their mandate.
The government would also seek to fully disarm all non-Iraqi armed groups operating on Iraqi territory, the prime minister said.
International coalition mission ends
“We congratulate the Iraqi people on this great day, Oct. 1, 2026, and the major national achievement of ending the international coalition’s mission in Iraq,” Zaidi said.
