Iran’s military said on Sunday it had received information indicating that the United States had decided to resume strikes against the Islamic Republic, warning of retaliation if Washington takes action.
The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said in a statement carried by state-run broadcaster IRIB that the decision was allegedly made at a joint meeting in a European country with the approval of some regional states.
“If the United States makes a mistake,” Iran will retaliate against US interests and deployment areas in the region, the statement said.
Iran warns regional countries
The headquarters also warned countries in the region against supporting what it described as US aggression against Iran.
It said states that continued a “dual policy” towards Iran and aligned themselves with Washington would be considered complicit and could no longer expect restraint from Iran’s armed forces.
Tensions over regional conflict and Strait of Hormuz
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to carry out strikes against regional countries hosting US assets.
Iran also closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important waterways for oil and gas exports.
According to the source, Washington and Tehran signed a framework deal in June that provided for an end to military operations and arrangements to reopen the strait to shipping. The agreement later collapsed amid disagreements over navigation in the strategic waterway.
