Iran’s leadership is using the UN General Assembly session in New York to present Tehran’s position on regional and international disputes. Iranian officials are holding high-level meetings, engaging with US media outlets and think tank representatives, and using social media platforms.
These initiatives are being presented not as a display of military power on US soil, but as an effort to articulate Iran’s position through Washington’s “soft power” tools. Key issues include the Iran-US confrontation, the situation in the Middle East and Tehran’s nuclear program.
Pezeshkian gives interview to Fox News
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is attending this year’s UN General Assembly session with a busy schedule of meetings. He has met with the prime ministers of Pakistan, Lebanon and the Netherlands, and also participated in a joint meeting with American editors-in-chief, leading journalists and think tank representatives.
On Sept. 24, Pezeshkian gave an exclusive interview to Fox News, known for its close stance toward US President Donald Trump. During the interview, the Iranian president held the United States responsible for the conflict in the Middle East and ruled out a military dimension to Tehran’s nuclear program, which is under UN supervision.
He criticized Washington over the subsequent disruption of diplomatic processes and said Tehran remained ready for negotiations to reach an agreement to end the conflict.
Araghchi holds meetings with counterparts
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the diplomatic delegation at the UN headquarters and held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Russia, the United Kingdom, Jordan and Ukraine.
The meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister took on particular significance amid an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea in July that resulted in fatalities. The meeting with Jordan’s foreign minister also attracted attention because Iran had previously carried out retaliatory ballistic missile strikes on US military bases in Jordan.
Earlier in the week, Araghchi also met with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and several European counterparts. The Iranian official reportedly criticized Europe’s position on the war waged by Israel and the United States against Iran, as well as Tehran’s civilian nuclear program.
Iran warns Europe
Araghchi’s deputy, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Europe’s participation in US airstrikes against Iran would not go unanswered. He made the remarks in a post on the X platform after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that about 5,000 flights had been carried out from European bases to support the US operation.
