Iran has confirmed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for an indefinite period, following a statement issued overnight by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the entity responsible for managing maritime traffic in the area.

According to Report, citing a report by The Times of Israel, the decision was formalized after the IRGC cited rising tensions in the region attributed to the presence of US forces.

"Due to the tensions caused by the aggression of US forces in the region, as well as the statement issued by the Iranian armed forces last night, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until further notice," the statement read. The IRGC has instructed shipping companies and operators that had previously received clearance to transit the strait to await further instructions.

The Strait of Hormuz is widely considered one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints for the global energy supply. It serves as the primary conduit for a significant portion of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Persian Gulf nations to international markets. The closure of this waterway poses substantial risks to global energy security, potentially disrupting supply chains and causing volatility in international oil prices.
