Iran is awaiting an official US response to a proposal concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to the war in the Middle East.
According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump rejected an agreement proposed by Iran. Tehran put forward the initiative on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting in New York. Qatar-based mediators conveyed the proposal to the US side.
Iran said that, if an agreement is reached, the strategic waterway would be reopened within seven days and fighting in the region would cease. A US official had earlier described discussions with Iran through mediators as “positive and constructive.”
Iran ready for talks under conditions
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told journalists at the UN that all preparations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz had been completed if the US side seriously seeks to reach an agreement. He said that following an agreement, the parties could begin broader negotiations on mutually agreed issues.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” that Tehran was ready to negotiate on its nuclear program and other issues. He stressed that Iran would not yield to “pressure and threats.”
“Iran is not seeking war, but it will defend itself against pressure, threats and attacks,” Pezeshkian said.
The president added that an agreement exists under which Iran will not develop nuclear weapons.
Tensions continue in the region
Iran and its allies have carried out retaliatory strikes that have contributed to the conflict’s spread across the region. Tehran, together with Oman, controls the Strait of Hormuz and has carried out drone and missile attacks against US allies in the Gulf.
In Yemen, Iran-linked Houthi forces have targeted Saudi interests. The Saudi-led coalition said on Saturday that it had intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis toward Khamis Mushait and two drones heading toward Riyadh.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on an understanding between Iran and Oman concerning safe shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Defense officials from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan discussed the security situation, intelligence-sharing, military coordination and the integration of forces in Riyadh.
The UN Children’s Fund said that violence in Yemen had triggered a new humanitarian crisis and that severe food shortages among children were increasing.
