Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday accused European countries of applying double standards in their response to recent developments in the region, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
Araghchi made the remarks during meetings with several foreign ministers on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said he held talks with the foreign ministers of France, the Netherlands and Austria, as well as with his Iraqi and Azerbaijani counterparts.
Talks focus on regional and international issues
The discussions covered bilateral relations, regional and international developments, tensions between Iran and the United States, and the Strait of Hormuz, the ministry said.
Araghchi argued that insecurity in the strategic waterway was “entirely caused by the aggressive actions of the US and Israel”. He said restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz was linked to Washington ending actions that, in Tehran’s view, were causing instability.
“European countries that claim to defend the rule of law and human rights cannot remain silent over, or support, overt military aggression against Iran,” Araghchi said, according to the ministry.
Iran calls for end to support for Israel
The Iranian foreign minister urged all countries, particularly European states, to end “all forms of support for Israel” and take steps to “prevent its impunity”.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, according to the report. Tehran says the conflict has killed thousands of people. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy supplies.
