The first race in the capital was held in 2016 as the European Grand Prix. The following seven events were named the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
In 2016, Germany’s Nico Rosberg completed the race first. In subsequent years, Daniel Ricciardo of Australia, Lewis Hamilton of Britain, Valtteri Bottas of Finland, Sergio Perez of Mexico and Max Verstappen of the Netherlands finished at the top. Perez won in Baku for a second time in 2023. Oscar Piastri of Australia won in 2024, while Max Verstappen finished ahead of all his rivals in 2025.
No race was held in Baku in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Mercedes’ Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the standings with 292 points. His British teammate George Russell is second with 211 points, while Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari is third with 191 points.
Mercedes also leads the Constructors’ Championship with 503 points. Ferrari is second with 358 points, followed by McLaren with 306 points.
