Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov has received the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Dmitro Shlapachenko.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reported that the meeting involved an exchange of views on the current cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the UN, partnership prospects, as well as regional and international security issues.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the long-term and effective cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN has successfully developed across various directions. It was stated that next year will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, representing a significant milestone that creates important opportunities for further strengthening the partnership.
The parties emphasized Azerbaijan's active role in contributing to global challenges, noting the country's successful hosting of major international events in recent years. Specifically, the high-level organization of COP29 and the World Urban Forum were highlighted as indicators of the importance Azerbaijan places on multilateral cooperation. In this context, the signing of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026-2030 was noted as a new phase in cooperation with the UN system. It was also highlighted that Azerbaijan will continue to host significant international events in the future.
The meeting addressed Azerbaijan's role as a reliable bridge between Europe and Asia, projects aimed at expanding transport and communication links, the growing importance of the Middle Corridor, and new opportunities arising from cooperation with Central Asian countries, including the "C6" format.
Touching upon regional security issues, the Minister provided information on the realities in the region during the post-conflict period, large-scale restoration and reconstruction works in the liberated territories, and measures taken to ensure the safe and dignified return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands.
Regarding the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process, the Minister emphasized the importance of utilizing existing opportunities to ensure sustainable peace.
The Minister wished the new UN Resident Coordinator success in his activities. Dmitro Shlapachenko expressed his satisfaction with working in Azerbaijan and stated that the UN is interested in further developing cooperation with the country across all areas and strengthening the partnership in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
