A series of meetings under the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) framework will take place in Turkmenistan during the week beginning Oct. 7. The program includes a meeting of foreign ministers, a consultative meeting between Azerbaijan and Central Asian leaders, and a summit of heads of state.
Pezeshkian to attend CIS summit for first time
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will attend an expanded meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State as a special guest. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called it the first such instance in the organization’s history. The visit will give Tehran an opportunity to strengthen ties with regional countries and comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.
Leaders to meet in Avaza on Friday
The week’s first event will be a meeting of foreign ministers on Wednesday. A consultative meeting between Azerbaijan and Central Asian leaders will follow on Thursday.
On Friday, heads of state will gather in Avaza, a resort city in eastern Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan holds the CIS chairmanship in 2026.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in Turkmenistan on Thursday. He is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov that day.
On Friday, Putin will discuss the situation in the Middle East and bilateral cooperation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The two leaders last met in Bishkek in early September.
Ushakov said no separate meeting between Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was planned in Turkmenistan. Relations between Russia and Armenia have deteriorated as Yerevan has shifted toward the European Union and moved away from Moscow.
Shallowing of the Caspian Sea to be discussed
Following expanded talks on Friday, the Caspian Environmental Summit will be held. The leaders of the five Caspian littoral countries — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan — will attend. Discussions will also address the shallowing of the Caspian Sea.
