The remains of Rashadat Ali oglu Piriyev, a soldier who went missing during the First Garabagh War, will be laid to rest on May 22. The burial ceremony is scheduled to take place at the cemetery in Yeni Dashkand village, located in the Barda district of Azerbaijan.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons confirmed that the identity of the serviceman was recently established. Piriyev’s remains were identified as part of ongoing efforts to locate and identify those who disappeared during the conflict in the early 1990s.
The identification process is part of a broader state initiative in Azerbaijan to provide closure for the families of nearly 4,000 citizens still listed as missing from the First Garabagh War. Following the liberation of territories in 2020, several mass graves have been discovered in the Garabagh region, allowing forensic experts to use modern DNA technology to identify victims and return their remains to their families for proper burial with military honors.
