A father in Japan has sparked public concern after leaving his 7-year-old son unattended on Mount Fuji while continuing his ascent. The incident occurred on Thursday near one of the mountain huts located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters, according to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports.
The child was reportedly hiking with his father and older brother. After the boy complained of exhaustion and refused to continue, the father instructed him to wait on a bench at the sixth station of the Fujinomiya trail while he proceeded with the older sibling. A bystander later discovered the young child alone and alerted the authorities.
Approximately five hours later, the father and his older son returned to find police officers with the child. The boy was in good health and was subsequently reunited with his father. Local police have issued a stern warning to the father regarding the potential for criminal liability in such situations, and the father has expressed regret over his actions.
Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak at 3,776 meters, is a popular destination for hikers, but it presents significant challenges, including rapidly changing weather conditions and high altitudes. Authorities consistently advise hikers to remain together and prioritize safety, especially when traveling with young children, to prevent such dangerous situations.
