European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed the agreement on the European Union's 21st sanctions package against Russia. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, she announced the development via the social media platform X.
According to von der Leyen, the new restrictive measures are designed to further weaken the economic foundation of the Russian military machine. "We are adding 32 more Russian banks, as well as cryptocurrency companies and oil trading platforms, to our list of prohibited transactions. We are also freezing the correction of the oil price cap for one year to ensure the Russian military machine does not benefit from market fluctuations," she noted.
The European Commission President further stated that for the first time, the sanctions apply to vessels assisting Russia's "shadow fleet." She emphasized that the European Union has taken a significant step toward officially banning Russian military vessels from entering EU ports.
Von der Leyen expressed her gratitude to Ireland, which holds the presidency of the EU Council, for their assistance in reaching the agreement on the new sanctions package. The European Union has implemented multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, targeting various sectors including energy, finance, and technology to exert economic pressure on Moscow.
