Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for Muslims to integrate into the societies where they live while rejecting all forms of assimilation, according to Anadolu Agency.
Speaking Wednesday at an event in New York, Erdogan said Muslims in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, are being expected not only to integrate into society but also to assimilate.
“We say yes to integration, but no to all forms of assimilation,” he said.
Preserving identity and community ties
The event was organised by the Turkish-American National Steering Committee, the Union of International Democrats, the Independent Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association and the US Council of Muslim Organizations.
Erdogan stressed the importance of preserving Muslims’ identity and community ties while taking part fully in the societies where they live.
Call to vote in US midterm elections
He also urged Turkish citizens in the United States to exercise their democratic rights in the upcoming midterm elections.
“I call upon all our citizens to exercise their democratic rights and make their voices heard. It is very important that you reflect your will at the ballot box,” Erdogan said.
The Turkish president further called on members of the community to maintain unity and solidarity as they continue their activities in the United States.
“I hope you will continue your activities here in unity and togetherness,” he added.
