Azerbaijan forward Mahir Emreli assessed the team’s 1-0 victory over Lithuania, saying the match had been as difficult as expected.
“It showed in the one-on-one battles”
Emreli said the team was well prepared for the match and the players fought for one another on the pitch. The forward said winning most individual battles in games like this can affect the result.
He noted that Azerbaijan could have scored more goals against Lithuania. Emreli said some players’ limited playing time at their clubs may have affected their ability to take their chances. In his view, players make decisions more comfortably in such situations as they gain more match practice.
“Perhaps the group’s most important win”
The forward stressed that the victory over Lithuania was important for the team following the result against Liechtenstein. Emreli said the win had a positive mental effect on the players and brought the team back into contention.
“It was a very important win. Perhaps it was the most important win in the group,” Emreli said.
He noted that one more match remained and said it was important not to celebrate excessively after a win or become disheartened by a poor result. Emreli said he hoped the team would secure a result by staying calm.
