Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestler Elmir Aliyev won a silver medal at the U-23 World Championships in Las Vegas, United States. He lost 4-13 to Kazakhstan’s Aybek Aitbekov in the final.
Speaking about the reasons for his defeat in the final, Aliyev said his main mistake was failing to make the right tactical adjustments in time and rushing too much.
Aliyev said that winning all his matches before the final had boosted his confidence. He said he had believed in himself and in his ability to win those bouts.
“I am not an athlete who is satisfied with a silver medal. My goal is always to become champion. I was very close to winning the title this time as well, and I believed I would take gold. But it did not happen,” Aliyev said.
He also said he hoped his teammates would perform successfully. Aliyev said athletes cannot always achieve the result they want and wished all his teammates victories in future competitions.
