A drone originating from the direction of Romania has crashed and exploded approximately 100 meters across the border within Bulgarian territory. The incident occurred in close proximity to a critical energy infrastructure site, specifically about 1,000 meters from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, according to reports cited by the Operative Information Center-OMM.
Following an emergency meeting of the Security Council, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev confirmed that the drone impacted a sunflower field. Authorities reported no casualties, and there was no damage to buildings or energy infrastructure. The site has been cordoned off as experts work to identify the origin and type of the unmanned aerial vehicle.
President Radev noted that the drone remained undetected by radar systems both while traversing Romanian airspace and upon entering Bulgarian territory. The presence of the device was only alerted when Romanian border police recorded the sound of its flight, shortly followed by Bulgarian border patrols hearing the explosion. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov stated that preliminary assessments suggest the drone may have been carrying a significant payload of explosives.
The Trans-Balkan pipeline is a strategic energy route that has historically played a vital role in regional gas transit.
