Barcelona sporting director Deco has explained why the club decided to sign Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the player joined Barcelona from Arsenal shortly before the summer transfer window closed.
Barcelona’s search for a forward
According to Deco, the club lost one of its main forwards, Robert Lewandowski, during the summer. He stressed that the Polish player had given everything for Barcelona and helped the team win titles.
“The time for change had come, and Lewandowski also wanted to change his environment. Our aim was to sign a forward with different qualities, someone who moves actively on the pitch and contributes to team play,” Deco said.
The choice changed after Alvarez deal fell through
The sporting director said Julian Alvarez was one of the players considered by the club. However, Atletico’s management immediately made clear that it would not sell the Argentine forward.
“Gabriel Jesus was not initially part of our plans, and we were not aware of his situation. Once we understood that signing Julian would not be possible, Gabriel became the ideal choice. We needed a player with precisely these qualities,” Deco said, according to Barca Universal.
Gabriel Jesus has scored two goals in four appearances for the Catalan club.
Barcelona’s decision reflects the club’s effort to reshape its attacking options by prioritizing mobility, link-up play and tactical flexibility. Jesus can operate as a central forward or from wider positions, giving the team additional alternatives in the final third.
