The number of military personnel killed in an incident in the Caspian Sea off Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region has reached 14.
The “Operative Information Center-OMM” reported this, citing the Kazakhstan Ministry of Defense.
The ministry said the bodies of two military personnel who had previously gone missing in the Caspian Sea were found on the morning of Sept. 25.
The Kazakhstan Ministry of Defense said the search operation had been completed.
The tragedy occurred on Sept. 24 while the military personnel were carrying out a training and combat mission in the Caspian Sea. Seventeen military personnel were swept away after weather conditions sharply deteriorated. Three people were rescued, while 14 died.
The Caspian Sea is a strategically important body of water bordered by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Russia and Turkmenistan. Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region lies on its northeastern coast and hosts significant maritime and military activity.
