The Supreme Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan has concluded the cassation proceedings regarding the appeal filed by Rashad Malikzada, the former head of the Financial Service of the Training and Education Center of the Azerbaijan Army.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the final decision was announced today during a hearing presided over by Judge Alasgar Novruzov. The court ruled to reject the appeal, thereby upholding the original verdict.
Rashad Malikzada was detained by the State Security Service (SSS) on September 26, 2022. Following his trial at the Baku Military Court, he was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison. This sentence was previously upheld by the Baku Court of Appeal.
Malikzada was charged under Articles 179.4 (misappropriation in a particularly large amount) and 313 (official forgery) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was accused of embezzling 9,369,411 manats. While he has reimbursed 848,000 manats to the state budget, the court has also ordered the confiscation of his assets. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by Azerbaijani authorities to combat corruption and ensure financial transparency within the country's defense sector.
