Well-known businessman Adnan Ahmadzada, who is accused of economic security sabotage and embezzlement, has reached the end of his current detention term.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing Qafqazinfo, that the State Security Service (SSS) petitioned the court in connection with the matter.
The petition said the 13-month investigation period was insufficient for a particularly serious criminal case and that additional evidence needed to be collected in the large-scale case. The SSS also requested an extension of the accused’s detention because the investigation had been prolonged.
The Sabail District Court found the petition justified and granted it. Under the judge’s ruling, Adnan Ahmadzada’s detention was extended by the maximum permitted period of six months.
Under the law, the maximum pretrial detention period in particularly serious criminal cases is 13 months. In exceptional circumstances, it may be extended to 19 months.
Ahmadzada previously held a senior position at SOCAR. He later became known internationally as an oil magnate and was arrested by the SSS in September last year.
