China said Monday that dialogue with the United States was an “important pathway” to ensuring artificial intelligence benefits everyone, following an agreement to establish a formal framework for bilateral talks on the technology, Anadolu Agency reported.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing was ready to continue exchanges with Washington during a news conference, responding to a question from an Anadolu correspondent.
“This is an important pathway for global AI for good and for all,” Guo said.
China backs a central UN role
Guo said China also supported giving the United Nations a central role in creating “a fairer and more equitable global AI governance system.”
Washington and Beijing agreed to establish the US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s summit with US President Donald Trump at the White House last week, according to the US administration. The first round of talks is scheduled for November.
Talks to address AI risks and incidents
“We are ready to maintain exchanges with the US through the artificial intelligence intergovernmental dialogue,” Guo said.
He described the engagement as part of efforts to build a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability” based on “respect, fairness and reciprocity.”
The framework is intended to facilitate discussions on the risks and benefits of AI and create a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving the technology.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said future discussions could also cover protocols for responding to critical threats, including uncontrollable autonomous AI agents and the spread of cyber and biological weapons capabilities to non-state actors.
