Chilean authorities issued a yellow alert for the Santiago Metropolitan Region on Tuesday as heavy rain caused flooding and activated ravines, the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED) said.
Flooded streets and underpasses were reported in several municipalities, along with a landslide in Melipilla, southwest of Santiago, and activated ravines in San Jose de Maipo, southeast of the capital, local outlet BioBioChile reported.
Emergency teams have been sent to several locations to respond to incidents and monitor conditions. The alert will remain in force until the weather no longer warrants it, SENAPRED said.
Chile’s Meteorological Directorate forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across the region’s coastal mountain range, valley and foothill areas. It also warned of thunderstorms, hail and strong local wind gusts in those areas and in the mountains.
The National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) assessed the probability of debris flows and landslides as high in the coastal mountain range, valley and foothills, and lower in the higher mountain range.
Based on the weather and geological assessments, SENAPRED replaced an earlier Preventive Early Warning with the yellow alert, coordinating the decision with the Metropolitan Regional Presidential Delegation. Authorities said resources would be deployed progressively as conditions develop to limit risks to people, property and the environment.
Residents have been urged to follow official updates and instructions from emergency services while rainfall and related hazards are monitored.
