Portugal defender Joao Cancelo has commented on the situation involving Cristiano Ronaldo. He highlighted the importance of the team captain to Portuguese football and said he hoped the issue would be resolved in the best possible way.
“Cristiano is our captain and the symbol of the national team. He is the best. Everyone knows what he means to Portugal and what he has given the country,” journalist Fabrizio Romano quoted Cancelo as saying.
“I believe everything will definitely work out in the best possible way. We all want the situation to be resolved calmly and with the respect Cristiano deserves,” the defender added.
The 41-year-old forward left Portugal’s training camp early amid disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo was left on the bench and did not play in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway in the second round of the Nations League. After a news conference by Jesus and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença, Ronaldo left camp a day before the third-round match against Denmark. Portugal won that game 4-2. Jesus later said Ronaldo could return to the team whenever he wanted.
The Nations League is a UEFA competition for national teams, played in a league format. Portugal won the inaugural edition in 2019 and has remained among the competition’s prominent teams.
