Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly stated that Lake Ontario will retain its historic name, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s recent attempt to rebrand the body of water as "Lake America."
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the Canadian leadership emphasized the deep historical roots of the lake's current designation.
"The name 'Ontario' is derived from the Wendat language word 'Ontari'io,' which translates to 'beautiful lake' or 'great lake.' This name has a history spanning over 400 years, predating both the formation of the Canadian Confederation and the adoption of the US Declaration of Independence," Carney stated.
The Prime Minister further addressed the broader diplomatic tensions, noting, "We are aware that the US is changing its approach—its trade relations, foreign policy, national monuments, and even the names of its water bodies. However, Canadians understand that things must be called by their proper names. This lake was, is, and will always be Lake Ontario."
For context, on August 27, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, a move that took effect immediately. This decision follows a period of heightened diplomatic friction between Washington and Ottawa, stemming from a failure to reach a consensus on a new trade agreement and the subsequent imposition of reciprocal customs tariffs by both nations. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, serving as a critical waterway for both Canadian and American commerce and environmental ecosystems.
