A bear killed one person and injured another in Ulaanbaatar, prompting authorities to introduce emergency measures and allocate 1.8 billion Mongolian tugriks, or about $500,000, to protect residents from wildlife attacks, state-run news agency Montsame reported, citing officials.
Mongolia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said Thursday that 754 reports of bears entering populated areas had been recorded nationwide this year.
Authorities also reported 28 bear-related incidents in Ulaanbaatar’s green belt this year, 24 of which were confirmed.
Permits have been issued to cull 27 brown bears in a controlled manner across several provinces and the capital because of public safety and health concerns. Six bears have been killed so far under police supervision.
The government’s allocation will fund tranquilizer guns, capture nets and fuel for vehicles used by protected-area administrations.
