Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens has reached the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. The world No. 19 defeated Poland’s Iga Świątek, ranked ninth, in the quarterfinals.
The match lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes and ended with Mertens winning 7-6 (7-0), 6-3. In a first-set tiebreak, the Belgian took a 7-0 victory.
Mertens will face China’s Zheng Qinwen for a place in the final of the tournament in Beijing. The Belgian will therefore meet a representative of the host country in the semifinals.
