Bangladesh’s dengue death toll has risen to 201 since January after health authorities reported six more fatalities on Wednesday, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
September has been the deadliest month so far, with 104 deaths recorded. August followed with 43 fatalities, the DGHS said.
Dengue hospitalisations exceed 67,000
Authorities reported 1,868 new dengue hospitalisations in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases admitted to hospitals this year to more than 67,000. Most patients have since been discharged.
DGHS data shows that Bangladesh has recorded more dengue infections and related deaths this year than in 2024.
Dengue is transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. There is no specific treatment for the viral disease.
Measles-like illness outbreak
Separately, the DGHS reported 11 additional child deaths linked to measles-like symptoms, raising the overall toll since mid-March to 1,076. Of those deaths, 101 have been confirmed as measles-related.
The number of people with measles-like symptoms has reached 183,449, while confirmed cases stand at 20,851 after 1,270 new infections were recorded.
In response to the outbreak, Bangladesh’s Health Ministry has immunised around 20 million children, in addition to routine vaccinations.
