Deaths linked to measles in Bangladesh have risen to 1,201 after five more children died with measles-like symptoms, the country’s health authorities said Monday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Of the total deaths, 104 were confirmed as measles cases, according to the Directorate General of Health Services under the Health Ministry.
Authorities also reported 1,307 new suspected infections and 35 confirmed infections nationwide.
Since the outbreak was reported in mid-March, suspected cases have exceeded 214,000, while more than 23,000 confirmed cases have been reported.
Bangladesh historically had herd immunity against measles, but has lost it in recent years as vaccination coverage declined.
Since April, the Health Ministry has immunized more than 20 million children through special programmes, in addition to routine vaccinations.
