The world sumo championships will be held at the Baku Sports Palace on October 17-18, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Youth and Sports said.
Athletes from nearly 30 countries are expected to compete. Men, women and under-18 competitors will vie for medals in individual and team events.
The competition will take place on a specially prepared earthen dohyo ring, reflecting the traditions of Japanese sumo. The two-day championships will also feature a special show at the opening ceremony.
On October 17, under-18 girls and boys will compete in individual and team events. The men’s and women’s individual and team competitions will be held on October 18.
