Former Azerbaijan international Elmar Bakhshiyev has commented on the goalless draw with Liechtenstein in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League. He said Azerbaijan were expected to win before the match but failed to score.
Bakhshiyev said the draw with Liechtenstein was not the expected result. However, he disagreed with the view that the national team squad was made up of weak players.
He said the squad includes players with considerable experience in European club competitions. Bakhshiyev said questions about the head coach were natural when results fell short of expectations, and noted that two matches remained.
Bakhshiyev said the players could change people’s opinions by winning those matches and producing attractive football. He made the remarks to AZERTAC.
Azerbaijan, with two points, are second in the group. The team, led by head coach Aykhan Abbasov, will play Lithuania in Baku on Oct. 4.
