Today’s match between Sabah and Slavia in the second round of the UEFA Champions League league phase will be the 13th meeting between Azerbaijani and Czech clubs in European competitions.
Previous meetings
Among Azerbaijani clubs, Qarabag, Shamkir and Karvan have faced Czech opponents. The first such ties took place in the 1997/1998 season, when Qarabag lost 0-3 and 0-5 to Jablonec in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
In the 2000/2001 season, Shamkir lost both matches against Slavia, 0-1 and 1-4, in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. In 2006, Karvan lost 0-2 at home to a Prague club and drew 0-0 away.
In 2016, Qarabag drew 0-0 and 1-1 with Viktoria Plzen in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Czech club advanced on the away-goals rule. That season, the Aghdam side also drew 2-2 with Slovan in Baku in the Europa League group stage before losing 0-3 away.
In the 2022/2023 Champions League play-off round, Qarabag drew 0-0 with Viktoria in the first leg and lost 1-2 in the return match. Azerbaijani clubs have therefore failed to win any of their previous 12 meetings with Czech sides.
The Sabah-Slavia match will kick off at 20:45 at Baku Olympic Stadium.
