Azerbaijan has achieved a record result at the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku. The national team won five medals to finish second in the standings behind Japan.
Murad Fatyev secured Azerbaijan’s fifth medal. He defeated Serbia’s Nemanja Majdov in the men’s 90kg category to win bronze.
The bout went into the “Golden Score” period, where Fatyev won with a yuko score. It was his first medal at a World Championships.
Japan’s Sanshiro Murao defeated compatriot Goki Tajima by ippon in the men’s 90kg final to claim gold. The victory extended Murao’s unbeaten run to 27 bouts.
Georgia’s Tato Grigalashvili defeated Azerbaijan’s Zelim Tskayev in the men’s 81kg final, earning his country its first gold medal of the championships. The closely contested bout went into “Golden Score,” with Grigalashvili winning in the fourth minute of extra time. Tskayev took silver.
More than 620 athletes from over 90 countries are competing at the World Championships, which run from October 4 to 10. On the final day of individual competition in Baku, athletes will contest the remaining gold medals in the heavyweight categories.
