As temperatures fall, demand for electric and gas heaters rises. At the same time, faults in household electrical and gas systems, the use of non-standard or homemade heaters, overloaded electrical networks, carelessness and lack of supervision can cause fires or explosions.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the Ministry of Emergency Situations (FHN) has issued an appeal to the public.
The ministry said that some citizens, as well as individuals and legal entities, disregard safety rules and commit negligent acts, which can lead to tragic consequences, including loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure.
“If a fire breaks out, cover your mouth and nose with a damp piece of cloth, such as a towel, scarf or clothing, and move by crouching or crawling to protect yourself. To keep smoke from entering another room, seal gaps around the door with a damp cloth. Close doors and windows to prevent the fire from spreading. If you cannot leave your apartment, wait for firefighters on a balcony or by a window. Do not use the elevator to leave the building. If a fire occurs in an electrical shaft, apartment or other area of a multi-storey building, residents of other apartments should remain inside until rescuers arrive and seal gaps around their entrance doors with damp cloth to protect themselves from smoke,” the ministry said.
Cold-weather safety guidance focuses on reducing the risks associated with heating equipment and household utility systems. Residents should use appropriate heaters and avoid overloading electrical networks, while following emergency services’ instructions if a fire occurs.
