Diplomats and foreign representatives working in Azerbaijan would be required to register if they stay in the country for more than 15 days under proposed amendments to the Migration Code.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the draft amendments were discussed at a meeting of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) Committee on Legal Policy and State Building held today.
Under the draft, foreign staff members of diplomatic missions and consulates of foreign states operating in Azerbaijan, as well as staff members of bodies, divisions and representative offices of international organizations, would be subject to registration if they temporarily stay in Azerbaijan for more than 15 days. The same requirement would apply to their foreign or stateless family members living with them, as well as foreign nationals and stateless persons visiting Azerbaijan on a diplomatic mission or a special mission in cases provided for by international treaties to which Azerbaijan is a party.
They would be issued a registration certificate confirming their status and registration in Azerbaijan.
Other proposed amendments to Article 25 further clarify the list of persons covered by entry visas issued for official visits.
Under the proposed wording, an official visit visa would be issued to foreign or stateless staff members of diplomatic missions and consulates of foreign states operating in Azerbaijan, staff members of bodies, divisions and representative offices of international organizations, and their foreign or stateless family members living with them. The visa would also cover foreign nationals and stateless persons visiting Azerbaijan on a diplomatic mission or a special mission in cases provided for by international treaties to which Azerbaijan is a party.
The proposed changes are intended to clarify registration and visa procedures for diplomatic personnel, international organizations and special missions operating or visiting in Azerbaijan. The amendments must be approved through the legislative process before taking effect.
