Oct. 5 is World Teachers’ Day.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that teachers’ professional holiday is also being observed in Azerbaijan.
On Oct. 5, 1966, the first international document setting out the conditions of teachers’ professional work, known as the “Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers,” was adopted at a conference convened jointly by UNESCO and the International Labour Organization.
In 1994, UNESCO designated the date as World Teachers’ Day. It is also included in the United Nations’ calendar of international and world days. The observance aims to highlight teachers’ standing in society and their role in education and development.
World Teachers’ Day is observed globally in more than 100 countries, while some countries mark a national teachers’ day on different dates.
Azerbaijan has observed the day since 1993.
