October 4 marks six years since Jabrayil city was liberated from Armenian occupation.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” recalls that on October 4, 2020, alongside Jabrayil city, nine more villages in the district — Karxulu, Shukur beyli, Chereken, Dashkasan, Horovlu, Mahmudlu, Jafarabad, Yukhari Maralyan and Dajil — were liberated from enemy occupation. Azerbaijan’s three-color national flag was raised in the liberated areas.

The liberation of Jabrayil from enemy occupation partially restored state control over the Azerbaijan-Iran border.

Jabrayil District was established on August 8, 1930. It was abolished on January 4, 1963, and incorporated into Fuzuli District, then re-established on June 17, 1964. Jabrayil lies in the southeastern part of the Lesser Caucasus, on the Geyan Plain and the Garabagh Range. To the south, the district borders the Islamic Republic of Iran along the Araz River. It covers 1,049 square kilometers and is mainly mountainous. The banks of the Araz River were once densely covered with tugay forests. The soils of the plains along the river are highly fertile dark chestnut soils.

Armenian armed forces occupied Jabrayil District on August 23, 1993. At the time of the occupation, the district consisted of one city, four settlements and 97 villages. During the occupation, residents displaced from Jabrayil settled in nearly 2,000 residential areas across 58 districts of Azerbaijan, including tent camps, freight cars and dormitories. The village of Jojug Marjanli in Jabrayil was liberated during the Horadiz operation on January 5, 1994.

Six days after Azerbaijan’s victory over the enemy in the Patriotic War, on November 16, 2020, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the liberated Jabrayil District. The President raised the Azerbaijani flag in Jabrayil city and at the Khudafarin Bridge.

Under an order signed by President Ilham Aliyev, October 4 is marked each year as Jabrayil City Day.
