Azerbaijan has officially joined the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev has signed the law ratifying the country's accession to this international treaty.
The legislation confirms that the Republic of Azerbaijan adheres to the convention, which was originally signed in London on February 13, 2004. The agreement aims to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through the discharge of ballast water from ships, which is a critical environmental concern for maritime nations.
The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments is a key maritime treaty adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). By joining this convention, Azerbaijan aligns its national maritime regulations with global environmental standards, ensuring better protection of its marine ecosystems in the Caspian Sea against invasive species introduced by international shipping traffic.
