The State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan has successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle 11.5 kilograms of marijuana into the country via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from the Islamic Republic of Iran. The operation took place within the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment, where border search and operational measures led to the seizure of the illicit cargo.
This information was provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM by the State Border Service.
Operational and investigative measures regarding the incident are currently ongoing. The authorities emphasized that efforts to ensure the reliable protection of the state border and combat the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors continue to be a top priority for the agency.
The State Border Service of Azerbaijan frequently conducts such operations along the southern border, which remains a critical area for monitoring illegal cross-border activities. The use of UAVs by smugglers represents an evolving challenge, prompting the SBS to enhance its technical surveillance and rapid response capabilities to secure the national borders of Azerbaijan effectively.
