Azerbaijan beat Lithuania 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League. Head coach Ayxan Abbasov said after the match that he was pleased with his players’ effort.
“It was a hard-fought game. I thank my players. We knew this match was important for us. The players fought on the pitch and showed character. We saw players who gave everything for the win,” Abbasov said.
The head coach noted that the team’s next fixture would be an away match against Liechtenstein. He said Azerbaijan must win that game. Abbasov also praised the spirit he had seen from his players against Lithuania.
Abbasov said the tight schedule demanded a great deal from the players. He noted that Mahir Emreli, who played in all four matches, moved into defense at the end of the game despite his fatigue.
The head coach said he was pleased with Oruc Mammadov’s performance in his first match for the national team. In Abbasov’s view, the young player performed better than expected, and giving young players opportunities is important for the national team.
Azerbaijan have gone unbeaten in their last four matches. Abbasov said the run had boosted the team’s confidence and would help them in future competitions.
