Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved dress code requirements for educators at public general education institutions.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the document was adopted to implement the relevant presidential decree on amendments to the Law on General Education. It aims to foster a professional dress culture and ensure a consistent approach in public schools.
Under the requirements, a teacher’s clothing must not impede their active work or distract students. It should also help foster an appropriate attitude among students toward clothing and style, including choosing attire suitable for different situations.
Educators’ clothing and accessories must accord with the secular nature of general education and be clean, neat, simple, professional and appropriate for the season. Clothing and accessories that do not suit the nature of teaching or students’ age, or that fall outside the prescribed style, are not permitted.
Educators must follow the requirements while carrying out their work at school and when representing their school at official or ceremonial events. At events related to the history, culture and national and moral values of the Azerbaijani people, traditional clothing or its elements may be worn with the approval of the Pedagogical Council.
The decision concerns dress code rules, not a uniform. Experts say that teachers dressing professionally in line with a dress code can have organizational, pedagogical and management benefits. A professional style highlights teachers’ role in upholding professional standards and helps maintain an appropriate learning environment.
Education experts have also said in various discussions that, just as students wear school uniforms, a dress code for teachers should be considered part of a school’s overall corporate culture. They say this can also enhance the school’s public reputation.
