The path to the top was not easy for Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s most famous opera singers. Today known as a star of major opera stages, the artist worked as a theater cleaner during the early years of her career.

Anna Netrebko was born into a family with an engineer mother and a geologist father. Her musical talent attracted attention during her childhood. Her parents enrolled her in the “Kubanskaya pioneriya” choir in Krasnodar, where Anna’s exceptional voice began to emerge.
The singer has said that she was not particularly interested in opera as a child and would even change the channel when an opera performance appeared on television. However, a performance she watched at the Mariinsky Theatre during a visit to St. Petersburg completely changed her mind.
After that, Netrebko began to see her future exclusively on stage. She took part in various competitions and concerts and, at the age of 16, left her native Krasnodar to try to enroll at the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg Conservatory.
Her path to the main stage also began at the Mariinsky Theatre. However, the future opera star was not immediately given leading roles there. Netrebko initially performed in crowd scenes and later also worked as a cleaner at the theater.
Conductor Valery Gergiev recognized Anna’s talent and played an important role in her opera career. After performing various roles on the Mariinsky Theatre stage, Netrebko began receiving invitations from prestigious theaters around the world.
After first performing on tour in Riga, the artist later appeared in San Francisco in the opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila.” Her name soon became known throughout the international opera world.
In various interviews, Netrebko has said that audiences in the United States accept performers more readily, while audiences in Italy are more demanding. Nevertheless, she also achieved major success in Italy. One of the artist’s teachers and stage partners was the legendary Plácido Domingo.
Alongside her success in opera, Netrebko has also attracted attention in fashion and show business. She has repeatedly taken part in photo shoots for prominent magazines, while her personal life has remained a subject of media interest.
Netrebko was in a long-term relationship with Uruguayan baritone Erwin Schrott. The couple had a son named Tiago. The singer later revealed that her son had been diagnosed with autism. In interviews, Anna said that her son had difficulty communicating but was a very independent and tidy child. Netrebko and Schrott separated in 2013.
Later, the opera star began a relationship with Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov. The couple did not hide their relationship from the media and frequently shared photographs together. In the summer of 2024, it was announced that Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov had separated. However, they reportedly remained on friendly terms.
Netrebko does not hide the fact that she needs substantial rest after her demanding stage career. According to the singer, after performing challenging opera roles, she sometimes spends an entire day resting without speaking to anyone.
Another interest of the artist is painting. Netrebko creates works in watercolor, oil and graphic techniques. Some of her paintings have even been sold at auctions.
Anna Netrebko believes that appearance can provide a certain advantage in opera, but that voice and talent are what matter most. In her view, beauty alone cannot lead any artist to success. (lent.az)
