The world is currently going through a complex period marked by rapidly changing geopolitical realities, growing security challenges and fundamental transformations in the media sector.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev made the remarks in an address to participants of the Media Forum of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Baku on Oct. 1 under the theme “Building trust through media in a polarized world.”

The head of state noted that in the digital age, where differing interests and perspectives collide, any information disseminated has the potential to affect relations between societies and states:

“The media, which covers ongoing processes and conveys them to society, is a force capable of influencing the formation of public opinion, mutual trust and understanding, as well as opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. The widespread dissemination of disinformation and the creation of false information and materials through the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies directly affect public trust. At a time when the role of social media and digital platforms in the information space is rapidly growing, the media’s accountability and responsibility are increasing further. All this raises demands for the professionalism and objectivity of media institutions and makes it necessary to establish shared information responsibility.”

The president emphasized that reliable information must become a quality benchmark not only for professional journalism but for the information environment as a whole:

“Strengthening cooperation among government institutions, media outlets, digital platforms, journalists, researchers and civil society is important in this regard. Increasing media literacy and the responsible use of new technologies are also essential conditions for creating sustainable foundations of trust.”

The CICA Media Forum brings together media professionals and other stakeholders to discuss the role of journalism and digital platforms in promoting dialogue, understanding and confidence in international relations. CICA is a multilateral forum focused on strengthening cooperation and confidence-building among Asian states.
