Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan has announced an upcoming meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Sahiba Gafarova, scheduled to take place in Istanbul. The meeting marks a continuation of inter-parliamentary dialogue between the two neighboring nations.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Armenian media, reports that the speaker made the announcement during a statement to journalists. According to Simonyan, the discussions will be held within the framework of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which is slated for April 15-19. "In a few days, I will depart for Istanbul. Meetings are planned with the heads of the parliaments of Azerbaijan (Sahiba Gafarova) and Georgia (Shalva Papuashvili)," Simonyan noted. The Armenian delegation will also include deputies Sarkis Khandanyan, Tsovinar Vardanyan, and Hasmik Hakobyan.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) serves as a global organization of national parliaments, facilitating political dialogue and cooperation on international security and democratic governance. Meetings between the parliamentary heads of Azerbaijan and Armenia have become a significant platform for discussing regional peace and normalization efforts, providing a complementary track to executive-level negotiations. These diplomatic contacts in Istanbul are expected to focus on regional stability and the strengthening of parliamentary ties in the South Caucasus.
